The Teichert Foundation has generously provided support for DRI’s STEM Education Program to engage in a targeted STEM education outreach and engagement campaign in Washoe County, Nevada. This campaign will utilize three existing, bilingual Next Generation Science Standards aligned STEM kits that touch upon electricity, energy, and ecosystems topics, respectively. This campaign focuses on connecting with underserved PreK through third grade students and parents.

Fostering STEM interest and competency at a young age is essential. By the third grade, many students have decided whether they are “good” at science and math. This campaign exposes young Nevadans to more STEM topics, closing the gap in the STEM learning pipeline and increasing student confidence in their science and math skills at a critical age. In turn, this prepares the next generation to thrive in increasingly technology-driven workplaces.
Ten informal education events are planned in Washoe County. These events will feature hands-on activities for PreK-third grade aged children that spark curiosity and build content knowledge, as well as social emotional learning skills, through play-based STEM education engagements. DRI’s STEM Education Program is also offering parent trainings and video tutorials. More information about these events will be shared in the coming months at www.dri.edu/stem-education-program.
