SUMMARY:Dual Lens: Art and Science in Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring evening where we explore the fascinating intersection of art and science. This event will spotlight how creativity and curiosity transcend disciplines\, showcasing artists who draw inspiration from scientific inquiry and scientists who incorporate artistic practices into their work. Discover how these unique perspectives enrich our understanding of the world and ignite imagination. \nPurchase tickets online! \nDRI Storyteller: \nTiffany Pereira is an ecologist and scientific illustrator specializing in the flora and fauna of the desert southwest. She has more than 11 years of experience specializing in natural resource management\, wildlife management\, threatened and endangered species management and springs and seeps management. As both a researcher and artist\, she is also interested in graphic design and illustration for science communication. She provides these services\, along with outreach and educational services to DRI and local agencies. She has completed illustration commissions for the Nevada State Museum\, Las Vegas\, research publications\, and private entities. \nFeatured Speakers:  \nJessica Oreck often says that she collects the invisible. Not the magical\, science-fiction version\, but the stuff of life that is so commonplace\, it has receded below our collective conscious awareness. Working across film\, animation\, collage\, photography\, miniatures\, and large-scale installation\, all of her work strives to create a sense of wonder about those invisible\, overlooked aspects of the everyday. \nIn 2021\, Jessica opened a museum in Las Vegas\, NV called the Office of Collection & Design. It is devoted to the minuscule\, the forgotten\, and the discarded. It is essentially a 1000 square-foot installation – a palpable\, interactive manifestation of nostalgia. Visitors have described the museum as “a mix of your grandparent’s attic and Hogwarts Castle.” And have said the collections themselves are “wondrous\,” “magical\,” “charming\,” and “full of unexpected life.” It has been featured everywhere from Colossal to Atlas Obscura. Through the museum\, Jessica present various associated traveling exhibits\, installations\, and workshops around the US. \nThe Office of Collecting & Design also doubles as both an animation studio and a prop house for her work in film and animation. Two of Jessica’s bite-sized\, animated series were commissioned by TED\, and more are underway for a soon-to- launch children’s network. Jessica’s films have been shown at festivals including Sundance\, SXSW\, and Tribeca Film Festival as well playing theatrically around the world. The Criterion Collection recently hosted a retrospective of her documentary features. When not making films\, Jessica spends her time collecting – and these days – sharing those collections with visitors from around the world. \nManila-born and Vegas-raised\, *CoCojenkins is a multi-instrumentalist\, producer\, DJ\, and looper. As a looper\, she blends her classical training and beat-making skills to create psychedelic\, genre-bending compositions with a Hip-Hop foundation\, crafted live in front of her audience. \nBeyond her work as a music artist\, she founded There’s Nothing to do in Vegas—a cultural platform designed to spotlight and amplify Vegas-made art\, music\, and creative expression across all mediums\, connecting the world to the city’s vibrant and unexpected creative pulse. \nThank you to our community partner Nevada Humanities  \n \nThis production is not a Vegas Theatre Company event. SUMMARY:Nevada Robotics Presents: One Voice\, One Future: Nevada’s Commitment to our Youngest Learners Early Childhood Summit
DESCRIPTION:Nevada Robotics staff is presenting September 4\, 2025 at the 2025 Early Childhood Summit\, One Voice\, One Future: Nevada’s Commitment to our Youngest Learners at Caesar’s Republic in Stateline\, Nevada. The Early Childhood Summit will offer quality professional development on effective practices in the education of Nevada’s youngest students. \nPresentation Description \nReading and Robots for Early Childhood Education- Research shows that engaging early learners in hands-on engineering and computer science activities has profound and positive impacts on their literacy and math skill development. Join Nevada Robotics at DRI for a hands-on and engaging session of Books and Bots. Teachers will learn how to code robots using touch coding skills designed for Pre-K and K learners. These screen-free Books and Bots coding activities are tied to storybooks and teach literacy\, math\, and SEL standards and competencies. Books and Bots activities teach fundamental sequential thinking\, problem-solving\, and reasoning skills\, and they bring reading and math to life for young learners. \nDuring the workshop\, educators will learn to code a small robot\, will practice Books and Bots activities\, and will discuss robot integration ideas with their peers. Educators will become excited to introduce coding robots to their students and feel increased confidence that they can teach essential computational thinking skills to their students. By the end of the workshop\, teachers will be poised to integrate Books and Bots into their classroom teaching and learning practices. \nNevada Robotics offers a free Robot Lending Library in Reno\, Elko\, and Las Vegas where teachers can borrow robots throughout the year. No experience with computer science\, robots\, or engineering is necessary to register for this workshop. \nPresenter Bios \nAJ Long\, Nevada Robotics Director and Trainer \nAJ Long is a veteran educator and administrator who has dedicated her 30 year career to supporting teachers and students. She has a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and received her Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education. AJ is a licensed K-9 Nevada teacher with a Middle School Math Endorsement. Her passion is helping teachers by meeting them where they are and helping them grow their confidence in teaching robotics\, engineering\, and computer science. \nJill Strawder-Bubala – Trainer and Curriculum and Communications Manager \nJill Strawder-Bubala is a life-long educator with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism\, a Masters of Arts in English Literature\, and a Secondary Teaching Certificate. She has worked with children from ages preschool to college as both an educator and administrator. Jill is passionate about helping children of all ages develop strong reading skills to become life-long learners\, and about supporting teachers as they learn new skills and competencies. \nMichelle Wallace-Gallivan – STEM Trainer and Curriculum Specialist \nMichelle spent 28 years in the classroom teaching middle and high school biology\, physical science\, and chemistry. Over the last 5 years\, Michelle has embarked on professional development in STEM education and she is excited to merge this passion as well as her special education background with the robotics curriculum. Michelle is also eager to explore the potential for drone education at the middle and high school levels. Michelle earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a Masters of Science in Education. SUMMARY:AWE+2025 Collaborative: Wildfire & Beyond – Building an Adaptable and Resilient World
DESCRIPTION:AWE+ is a DRI global initiative formed in 2024. Reflecting the four classical elements of nature – air\, water\, earth\, and fire – AWE+ advances community resilience and adaptability in the face of increasing\, inevitable catastrophes that affect human lives and environmental ecosystems. It addresses tough challenges by promoting actionable solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration. \nThe AWE+2025 Collaborative will be both a reflective and transitional exercise. It will carry forward and reinforce the objectives of last year’s AWE+2024 summit where DRI brought together stakeholders of various disciplinary backgrounds to consider matters of resilience and recovery in light of the devastating impacts of wildfire. AWE+2025 will build on the 2024 conversations and examine in greater depth the cascading impacts of wildfire and smoke such as heatwaves\, flooding\, and droughts. Its goal is to: \n\nHighlight and prompt the continuing and urgent need for community\, regional\, and state leadership in taking action to strengthen our communities to mitigate inevitable catastrophes that are compounded by changes in climate\, land use\, and population.\nPromote interdisciplinary\, cross-sector collaboration as essential in strengthening the resolve for tough decision making on consequential impacts and challenges to achieve meaningful progress.\n\nWe invite 2024 participants to continue the conversation and welcome persons new to the AWE+ experience to join right in. \nVisit the AWE+ website for more information and to register!
